Pocono Garden Club 30th Annual Flower Show
July 14 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Pocono Garden Club annual show and plant sale set for new location July 14
The Pocono Garden Club’s 30th annual Flower Show will bloom in a new location on Saturday, July 14, 2018, with the theme “Winged Creatures” — butterflies, bees and other pollinators so vital to our environment.
The show and plant sale will take place at Northampton Community College’s Pocono Hall Building at 2411 Route 715 in Tannersville from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A $4 donation is requested for admission.
Featured will be creative floral designs, horticultural exhibits, a plant sale featuring a special selection of native plants that attract butterflies and bees, as well as plants grown by club members, a marketplace sale and more.
The educational program this year will be “Creating A Butterfly Garden,” given by Sharon Carey, an accomplished member of the Pocono Garden Club. Also present at the show will be the Penn State Master Gardeners and The Garden of Giving, this year’s featured charity.
Club members are excited about the new venue for many reasons. Along with a fully stocked public cafeteria, the beautiful and spacious facility is centrally located and a frequent stop for the Pocono Pony bus service. Also, it affords the club excellent display areas for exhibits, the plant sale, programs and other activities.
“After working hard all year, our club is anxious to welcome our regular attendees to our new location and we look forward to many new visitors joining us,” said Peg Zukawski, the garden club’s flower show chair. “We feel ‘Winged Creatures’ will be our best show ever.”
New to the 2018 plant sale, along with club members’ plant divisions, will be an extended collection of native plants. “These 4-inch transplants are specially selected for butterflies and pollinators,” Zukawski said.
The show will also feature a bake sale, tricky tray, progressive auction, and marketplace of new and gently used garden-related or plant-themed goods.
The annual flower show is the Pocono Garden Club’s main fundraiser. Some proceeds provide youth scholarships for educational activities and regional programs that support the study of gardening, floral arts, and conservation of forests and native environments. Last year the club gave scholarships for youths attending camps at Quiet Valley Living History Farm and the Monroe County Conservation District. The club also donated funds to the Garden of Giving, which helps feed the hungry.
Funds raised also support community service activities such as maintenance of the award-winning garden at the Hughes Library in Stroud Township, the Judy Holtz Memorial Butterfly Garden at the Monroe County Environmental Center in Bartonsville, and the Pocono Township Municipal Building Garden.
The club is accepting donations of items that can be sold or auctioned such as gift certificates to local businesses of all types, garden-related goods and products, new or gently used plant- or garden-themed items.
Donations may be dropped off at Shear Design Salon and Spa, 23 S. Sixth St., Stroudsburg, or given to any club member.
The Pocono Garden Club was founded 82 years ago and has grown to include 77 members from through Monroe County. Meetings are held at the Monroe County Conservation District building on Running Valley Road in Bartonsville. Membership is $15 per year.
The public is welcome to submit floral arrangements or horticultural specimens for exhibit and judging at the flower show in adherence with club guidelines, posted on the Pocono Garden Club’s Facebook page.
